Place value partner games and a base ten freebie

By Angela Watson

The 1st-5th grade Number and Operations in Base Ten partner games are now complete! Here’s a link to the original post I wrote explaining how the partner games are designed to work. You can use the games in Math Partner Game Routines or in math centers or math work stations. They’ve been a lot of fun to create, and I think they’re uniquely helpful for teachers who are implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) because the games include:

  • Integration of higher-level thinking and critical thinking skills (not just rote practice)
  • Hands-on activities through which kids actively construct knowledge: no worksheets!
  • Options for open-ended game play so that students are not “finished” until time is up
  • Challenge activities to extend game play and/or differentiate it
  • Math Talk questions/prompts to encourage students to analyze strategies and reflect orally or in writing about what they’re learning

The games are priced at $1 each, and I’ve bundled them by CCSS domain so you have everything you need for teaching each skill. Here’s the complete collection for the domains I’ve tackled so far:

And here’s a number and operations in base ten freebie for you! These are place value cards which feature numbers in standard form/base ten numerals, expanded form, and word names/number names. You can use these cards for sorting, matching, or whatever games you choose. I’ve included 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 digit numbers as well as decimals to the thousandths so you can print cards to meet a wide variety of student needs and skill levels.

If you enjoy this freebie, please consider rating it on TeachersPayTeachers or sharing it via social media to help spread the word to other teachers. Thank you for your support! I know that every dollar counts as a teacher, and I hope these games (and the other items I create) are a worthwhile investment for your students. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Terryl! I’ve gotten a bunch of requests for CCSS math stuff for kindergarten, so it’s definitely on my radar! After I finish the last set of 1st-5th partner games this fall, I’m going to look into it more.
